Gunung Halimun Salak National Park (GHSNP) is located in the Island of Java in Indonesia and it holds the largest remaining mountainous tropical rain forest in the whole West Java. Several peaks form this mountainous forest such as Mt. Sanggabuana, Mt. Halimun Utara, Mt. Kendeng, Mt. Halimun Selatan, Mt. Endut, and Mt. Salak.

The name "Gunung Halimun" comes from the local language (Sundanese) and it means "The misty mountain" due to the frequent mist that surrounds this mountain. The name "Salak" is the name of a fruit very common in Indonesia.

Based on the Ministry of Forestry decree No. 175/Kpts-II/2003, the park covers an area of 113,357 ha and it is located within three districts (Bogor, Sukabumi, and Lebak) of West Java and Banten Provinces.

The park itself plays important roles such as regulating the microclimate of the area, conservation of plants and animals, site for research and environmental education as well as site for recreation and ecotourism activities and preservation of the local culture. The forest also run by streams and rivers that are vital for the communities living within and around the park.
